Choosing TBM Disc Cutters: 17", 19" or 20" Rings for Hard Rock and Mixed Ground

Disc cutter selection starts with diameter. 17-inch cutters remain the workhorse for medium-diameter EPB and slurry machines in soft to medium ground, while 19-inch and 20-inch cutters are increasingly specified for large-diameter hard-rock and mixed-face drives. Larger rings allow deeper penetration per revolution, reduce the number of cuts per face and lower specific energy — a real advantage where volcanic or sedimentary mixed ground punishes the cutterhead.

Ring metallurgy matters as much as size. Standard steel rings suit soft rock and soil; heavy-duty steel rings resist abrasion and impact in medium-hard rock; carbide-insert rings are the choice for very hard rock at 300 MPa and above. Each cutter combines a ring, a forged body, a sealed bearing assembly, a face seal and a retaining pin — the bearing and seal usually determine whether a cutter is rebuilt or scrapped.

Wear life varies widely: expect roughly 10–30 m per ring in abrasive hard rock and 50–100 m in soft ground, so cutter inventory planning drives downtime.
