Open Gripper TBM: Main Beam Machines for Hard Rock

Open Gripper TBM: The Powerhouse of Hard Rock Tunneling

For tunneling through stable, competent rock, no machine matches the raw power and simplicity of the Open Gripper TBM (Main Beam TBM). Without the drag of a shield, these machines transfer thrust directly to the cutterhead, allowing for exceptional advance rates in hard geology.

How It Works

The Open Gripper TBM features a floating cutterhead support. High-pressure hydraulic grippers push outwards against the tunnel walls to anchor the machine. Propel cylinders then push the cutterhead forward from this anchored position to excavate the rock.

Because there is no shield, the tunnel walls are exposed immediately behind the cutterhead, allowing for the immediate installation of ground support such as rock bolts, wire mesh, or shotcrete.

Advantages

Speed: The most efficient method for excavating hard rock. Flexibility: Allows for easy access to the tunnel face and walls for rock support installation. Cost-Effective: Simpler design and operation compared to shield machines.

Limitations and Solutions

Open Gripper TBMs are best suited for stable rock. If fractured zones are encountered, our machines are equipped with auxiliary thrust systems and roof shields to bypass the bad ground safely.
