Cutterhead Retrofit vs New TBM: When to Modernize Tools, Openings, Wear Protection

Every cutterhead is designed around the ground the machine was built for. When a drive moves into mixed face, abrasive Alpine rock or high-pressure sub-sea conditions, the limit appears quickly: gauge cutters fall out of tolerance, disc consumption climbs, muck builds up behind the face and openings blind off. Settlement-sensitive European urban work adds pressure, because changing tools or face pressure underground is slow and expensive. Audit cutterhead condition, tool type and opening geometry before mobilisation — not after the first rings.

A retrofit normally covers four areas: tool layout and size, for example larger discs or reinforced gauge protection; bucket and opening geometry for cleaner
