TBM Sealing Systems: Main Drive, Articulation and Tail Seals Explained
On an EPB or slurry TBM, the sealing system is the pressure boundary: main drive seals protect gearbox and bearing oil, articulation seals absorb steering movement between shields, and tail seals close the gap between shield skin and segment ring. In the high water table alluvial ground now driving metro expansion across South Asia, that boundary decides whether a drive stays dry or turns into a costly dewatering and repair exercise.
Wear is rarely uniform. Abrasive fines, elevated groundwater pressure, grout backflow, heat and poor grease quality all attack the sealing faces, while every articulation stroke and segment ring tolerance adds mechanical load. Typical warning signs include contaminated lubricant, grease oozing with fines, falling grease pressure, water in the gearbox oil or visible tail loss. Catching these early matters more than any single seal specification.
In practice, main drive seals are checked every shift and assessed at planned cutterhead inspections, articulation and tail seals on a grease-consumption and leakage trend, with replacement scheduled before ring building or cutter changes rather than during them.
