TBM Sealing Systems: Main Drive, Articulation and Tail Seals in Mixed Ground

A tunnel boring machine is only as leak-tight as its sealing system. Three families do most of the work: the main drive seal, which keeps face pressure and slurry or muck out of the gearbox; articulation seals, which absorb steering movement between shield sections; and the tail seal, which closes the gap where the segment ring leaves the shield. Most modern seals are rubber and metal composites — energised elastomer lips bonded to steel carriers — selected for compression-set resistance and abrasion tolerance. Wear is driven by the ground itself. In the volcanic and sedimentary mixed ground now common on Latin American metro and water tunnel programs, sharp basalt and andesite fragments, quartz-rich sands and sticky clays attack seal faces from different directions within the same ring. Add high face pressure on EPB and slurry machines, thermal cycling, contaminated tail seal grease and heavy articulation cycling, and the result is slow water and fines ingress — often first seen as rising gearbox oil moisture or grout loss.
