Spare-Parts Strategy for Metro TBMs in Latin America's Mixed Ground

Latin America's metro and water tunnel programs are pushing TBMs through some of the most abrasive mixed ground anywhere — interbedded volcanic tuff, basalt flows and sedimentary sequences that can change face conditions within a single ring. That variability hits the consumables budget first: disc cutters, segment bolts, seals and screw conveyor wear parts. When a cutter change or a failed seal stops the heading, the real cost is measured in idle crews, not in the parts themselves. Procurement planning has to start there.

A workable minimum stock is built on criticality, not on catalogue volume. Contractors typically hold enough disc cutters, cutter rings and hub hardware to cover at least one full cutterhead change, plus segment bolts matched to the lining type, main bearing and shield seals, and the highest-wear screw conveyor components. Track consumption per ring by ground condition, then set reorder points against real lead time rather than optimism.

That is where factory-direct supply changes the calculation. OUSUN, based in Deyang, Sichuan — China's largest TBM industrial cluster — manufactures disc cutters, segment bolts, seals, screw conveyor parts and hydraulic and electrical spares, with typical lead times of two to four weeks. Because the parts are interchangeable across EPB, slurry, hard-rock and pipe jacking machines, one supplier can support a mixed fleet. Reach [email protected] or tunnel-boring.com.
