How to Choose the Right TBM Disc Cutter: 17-inch, 19-inch or 20-inch Rings
Southeast Asia's dense metro and rail programmes are pushing TBMs through mixed ground: soft clays and silts, water-bearing karst, and abrupt hard-rock intrusions. Cutter selection starts with diameter. 17-inch rings remain the workhorse for EPB machines in soft and mixed ground, while 19-inch and 20-inch cutters are increasingly specified where higher penetration rates, thicker rings and longer wear life are needed. Choosing the wrong diameter changes thrust, torque and muck flow — not just wear cost.
Metallurgy follows the geology. Standard steel rings suit soft and karstic ground; heavy-duty steel rings handle medium-hard rock; carbide-insert rings are the choice for very hard rock at 300 MPa and above. Every cutter is a system: cutter ring, hub or body, bearing, seal and pin. The ring wears, but the seal and bearing
