Double Shield TBMs in Hard Rock: 19-Inch Cutters, Continuous Lining, Faster Advance
In hard rock, advance rate is usually lost in the gaps between cycles. A Double Shield machine removes most of them: the telescopic shield lets the cutterhead keep boring while a segment ring is erected behind it, using the finished lining for thrust instead of stopping to reset grippers on every stroke. On long mountain tunnels, that overlap turns excavation and support into one continuous process rather than two alternating ones.
The other half of the equation is the cutting tool. Modern 19-inch heavy-duty disc cutters run at lower rotational speed for the same cutting velocity, which reduces bearing load cycles and heat in abrasive rock. Thicker discs, hardened hubs and better cutterhead wear protection extend intervals between cutter changes — the single biggest non-productive downtime item in hard-rock TBM operation, and a safety gain, since interventions happen less often.
That matters in markets such as Latin America, where metro and water transfer programs increasingly cross volcanic and sedimentary mixed ground — hard, abrasive, then squeezing. For contractors and buyers, the practical takeaway is spares strategy: interchangeable disc cutters, cutter hubs, seals, segment bolts and screw conveyor parts sourced factory-direct from the Deyang TBM cluster, typically within 2–4 weeks, keep a Double Shield machine boring instead of waiting.
